Tips for Keeping Calm During an MRI

Sometimes, an MRI is necessary for an accurate medical diagnosis. While this is a standard diagnostic procedure that many people take part in quite easily, it may be a stressful or anxiety inducing situation for others. There are many ways to make an MRI a more enjoyable experience, allowing the individual to remain calm for a successful imaging session.

Avoid Caffeine and Other Stimulants

Caffeine and other stimulants can exacerbate anxiety, causing a situation to be more stressful. If possible, schedule an MRI during the early morning hours, before having a cup of coffee. This sleepy state will help an individual to remain calmer.

Alternative to a Closed MRI

A closed MRI is the standard equipment used for MRI diagnostic testing. When most people think about this procedure, they imagine being placed inside of a large, closed tube. An open MRI offers the same testing, but the individual is not placed within a closed tube. This equipment is ideal for those who have anxiety or are claustrophobic. Not all hospitals or imaging centers offer the open models, so potential patients should always determine whether or not this is an option that is available to them in their local areas.

Listening to Relaxing Music

MRI equipment can be quite loud, and the imaging process is fairly lengthy. Patients should request calming music in order to help them relax through the process. Some offices may already have music prepared for their patients, especially if they have many children that come through for MRI services. It is important to call the imaging office and discuss this idea with the staff before the appointment; this allows the patient to find out what options are available to them, and how they can go about making the process as stress-free as possible.

An MRI can be an unsettling experience for some people, but there are a variety of ways to ward off anxiety during the imaging procedure. Many offices strive to provide patients with the most positive experiences that they can offer.
